Over the course of his career, he has taught and mentored a substantial and diverse body of learners across multiple stages of healthcare training, from Level 3 Health and Social Care students through to Level 7 medical students and junior doctors. This breadth enables him to build knowledge from first principles through to advanced clinical reasoning with clarity and authority.

His teaching approach is recognised for its structure, precision, and unwavering emphasis on safety. Rather than focusing solely on techniques, Dr Merchant trains practitioners to understand why a treatment is performed, when it should not be performed, and how to think critically in complex or uncertain situations. Dr Merchant began his medical career in India, where he completed his MBBS and gained extensive experience within hospital based and surgically focused clinical environments. He later advanced his training in General and Gastrointestinal Surgery in the United States, where he refined his understanding of procedural precision, structured operative planning, and disciplined clinical reasoning.

He went on to complete a Master of Science at Barts and The London School of Medicine, part of Queen Mary University of London, with an academic focus on minimally invasive surgery. This postgraduate training strengthened his command of surgical science and enhanced his ability to translate complex clinical principles into structured, high level education.

Dr Merchant’s professional philosophy is grounded as firmly in ethics as it is in science. He holds certification in Bioethics and Human Rights from UNESCO, reflecting his commitment to patient dignity, informed consent, and responsible medical practice.
