About KoTao Japanese Facial Massage

A hands-on facial treatment designed to relax, sculpt and refresh the face without needles, machines or procedural downtime.

KoTao combines techniques inspired by Kobido Japanese facial massage with the more targeted sculpting approach of SkinTao. Rather than treating the skin alone, the massage works across the face, jaw, neck and décolleté using a changing rhythm of lighter, faster and more deliberate movements.

The aim is simple: release facial tension, encourage circulation and leave the face looking fresher, less puffy and more defined.

What is KoTao?

KoTao sits somewhere between a traditional Japanese facial massage and a modern facial sculpting treatment.

It draws on techniques associated with Kobido, a Japanese facial massage tradition characterised by precise, rhythmic hand movements, while incorporating contemporary facial massage and sculpting techniques.

This isn’t a facial where most of the appointment is spent waiting under a mask. It is predominantly hands-on.

Your practitioner works across the face, jawline, neck and décolleté, adapting the pressure and movements to the individual rather than performing exactly the same sequence on every face. The result is a treatment that feels deeply relaxing but is still purposeful.

What can KoTao facial massage help with?

Concern How KoTao may help
Facial puffiness
Massage may temporarily reduce the appearance of fluid-related puffiness.
Tired-looking skin
Increased superficial circulation can leave the complexion looking fresher.
Facial tension
Massage can help relax areas that feel tight or overworked.
Jaw tension
The treatment can focus more closely on the lower face and jaw.
Loss of facial definition
Sculpting movements can temporarily enhance the appearance of facial contours.
Dull complexion
The skin can appear brighter and more refreshed immediately afterwards.
Pre-event skin preparation
A non-invasive option when you want no procedural downtime.
General relaxation
Slower elements of the massage are designed to release tension and encourage relaxation.

What actually happens during the treatment?

KoTao is a 30-minute treatment. After a brief assessment, the skin is prepared and the practitioner begins a structured sequence of facial massage movements.

The technique varies throughout the treatment. You may notice lighter rhythmic movements followed by more deliberate work around areas such as the cheeks, jawline and facial contours.

Treatment extends beyond the face itself. The neck and décolleté are incorporated because facial tension and movement do not conveniently stop at the jawline. Particular attention can be given to areas where you personally hold tension or puffiness.

There are no needles. There is no energy-based device. And there is no recovery period.

Kobido vs KoTao: what's the difference?

This is worth explaining because the terms shouldn’t simply be used interchangeably.

Kobido refers to a Japanese facial massage tradition involving highly skilled, rhythmic facial massage techniques.

KoTao, as offered at Dr Hans Clinics, is a treatment combining Kobido-inspired techniques with the sculpting and rejuvenating approach of SkinTao.

So if you’ve been searching for a Kobido facial massage in London, KoTao may appeal to you, but we don’t pretend that every Japanese-inspired facial massage is identical. Different techniques, practitioners and treatment protocols matter.

Is KoTao a 'natural facelift'?

You’ll see this phrase everywhere online. We prefer not to oversell massage.

A facial massage cannot reproduce the structural changes achieved by surgery, replace lost facial volume or permanently tighten significantly lax skin.

What it can do is temporarily improve how rested, de-puffed and defined the face appears while relieving facial tension. And sometimes that’s exactly what somebody wants.

Not every face needs injecting.

When will I see a difference?

Many people notice that their face looks fresher, less puffy and slightly more defined immediately after treatment.

The degree of visible change varies between people and can depend on factors such as baseline puffiness, facial tension, skin condition and anatomy.

Some of the immediate effect of facial massage is temporary. KoTao should therefore be viewed as a maintenance and wellbeing treatment rather than a permanent method of facial lifting.

For an event, it can be particularly useful when you want a refreshed appearance without the downtime associated with more intensive treatments.

Who is KoTao for?

KoTao may suit you if you want a treatment that is non-invasive, hands-on and relaxing, while still having a facial sculpting element.

It can also work well for people who aren’t interested in injectable treatments or who simply want something completely different between their usual skin or aesthetic appointments.

It isn’t positioned as an alternative to every aesthetic treatment. If your concern is significant skin laxity, volume loss, pigmentation, acne scarring or another structural or dermatological concern, facial massage alone is unlikely to address it.

We would rather tell you that than sell you twelve massages for something massage cannot fix.

Before your KoTao appointment

There is very little preparation required. Come with clean skin where possible, although the skin can be prepared before treatment. Let your practitioner know about any recent facial procedures, active skin problems, recent surgery or medical conditions that could affect whether massage is appropriate.

If you’ve recently had injectable or other facial treatments, tell us what you had and when when booking so we can advise whether your appointment should be postponed.

After your treatment

There is normally no downtime after KoTao. You can return to your usual day immediately. The skin may look slightly flushed immediately after a stimulating massage, but this should generally settle.

The most obvious immediate changes tend to be a fresher complexion and a face that feels more relaxed.

There is no complicated seven-step aftercare routine. Your face has been massaged, not launched into space.

FAQ's

Is KoTao the same as Kobido?

Not exactly. KoTao incorporates techniques inspired by Kobido Japanese facial massage alongside SkinTao facial sculpting techniques. It is therefore better described as a Japanese-inspired facial sculpting massage rather than simply renaming the treatment Kobido.

The KoTao treatment at Dr Hans Clinics takes approximately 30 minutes.

A 30-minutes KoTao treatment costs £80.

Facial massage can temporarily make the face appear less puffy, more rested and somewhat more defined. It should not be confused with permanent tissue lifting or surgical results.

It may help temporarily reduce the appearance of puffiness, particularly where fluid accumulation contributes to the appearance. Persistent or unexplained facial swelling should not simply be treated cosmetically and may require medical assessment.

The massage can focus on areas of facial and jaw tension and some people find this particularly relaxing. Persistent jaw pain, locking, significant bruxism or suspected temporomandibular joint problems require appropriate clinical or dental assessment.

It shouldn’t be. Some sculpting movements are more stimulating than a conventional relaxing facial, but pressure can be adjusted throughout the appointment.

No significant downtime is expected. Temporary mild redness can occur after stimulating facial massage.

Yes. Because there is no expected procedural downtime, it can work well as a pre-event treatment when the aim is for the face to look fresh and less puffy.

There isn’t one medically necessary schedule. Some people book facial massage occasionally for relaxation or before events, while others choose regular sessions because they enjoy the maintenance effect.

Timing matters. Facial manipulation soon after injectable treatment may not be appropriate. Tell the clinic exactly what treatment you have had and when before booking so your appointment can be scheduled appropriately.

Absolutely. The technique is adapted to the individual’s anatomy and areas of tension rather than being a gender-specific treatment.

Claims around collagen stimulation should not be overstated. Mechanical stimulation and massage can affect local circulation and tissue behaviour, but a 30-minute facial massage should not be presented as a proven collagen-remodelling treatment comparable with procedures specifically designed to induce dermal remodelling. If collagen stimulation is the primary goal, a consultation can explore treatments designed specifically for that purpose.

Before booking PRF EZ Gel for my under eyes, I had a lot of questions and concerns. Dr Hans took time to go through all of them properly and did not rush the consultation. She explained the treatment in a balanced way and set realistic expectations. The procedure itself was more comfortable than I imagined and the result looks very natural. My face looks more rested rather than noticeably treated, which was important to me.

I had a great experience with Dr. Hans. I wanted to do Ez gel under my eyes. She listened to my concerns and took her time to explain why it wouldn’t be suitable treatment for me. Instead we agreed to tighten my skin with Tixel - I had 3 sessions, very happy with the results.

Absolutely the most knowledgeable and kindest doctor I’ve met. I’ve had injectables and PRF and soon tixel with her. She makes you feel so comfortable and confident. She will also say no and not just try to sell which is so important. She truly wants to improve the life of others which isn’t the case throughout the aesthetic industry (a lot of people try to exploit insecurities) and I used to work in it so I know! Thank you so much
